  • Technical Specifications and Material Properties

The Grade 4 titanium is the highest strength level in commercially pure titanium grades. It has good formability, improved mechanical qualities and fills the gap between pure titanium and titanium alloys.

The applications benefit from a material that can survive tremendous stress, yet still be biocompatible. The 6 mm diameter form provides the ideal balance for precise machining operations.

Superior Corrosion Resistance for Demanding Environments

Grade 4 titanium has excellent resistance to chemical damage in aggressive industrial environments. Your equipment is protected in chloride situations where stainless steel breaks quickly.

The material develops a stable passive oxide layer which rapidly repairs when damaged. This self-healing characteristic prevents the pitting corrosion and stress corrosion cracking so typical in marine applications.

Our bars have proven performance in petrochemical plants, oil and gas facilities and chemical processing equipment. The 6mm diameter size is ideal for pump shafts, valve components and fastener manufacture where reliability is key.

    Precision Manufacturing and Dimensional Control

INT uses high-end centerless grinding technology for a better surface polish and close tolerances. Your machining processes benefit from continuous diameter control and little runout.

We stock bars in conventional lengths from 2000mm to 3000mm, with longer lengths up to 6000mm available on request. Straightness is maintained to better than 0.5mm per metre to prevent whipping during high speed milling.

The Gr 4 Titanium Bar Dia 6mm arrives ready for Swiss-lathe operations with chamfered ends and polished surfaces. Our descaled and pickled finish ensures no alpha-case contamination interferes with your fabrication processes.

    Medical Device Applications and Biocompatibility

This grade of material has important applications in the manufacture of orthopaedic and surgical instruments. You get bars that are dual-certified to ASTM B348 industrial standards, and ASTM F67 medical specifications.

The increased strength of Grade 4 lends itself well to surgical instruments where rigidity and durability are required. Its mechanical qualities are advantageous for dental implants abutments, orthodontic archwires and bone fixation devices.

Our rigorous quality control includes ultrasonic testing to ASTM B548 to identify interior problems. Chemical composition study checks the quantities of interstitial elements that may compromise biocompatibility or long-term performance.

Machining Recommendations and Tool Life Optimization

Titanium is a poor heat conductor, thus the heat is concentrated at the cutting edges . This calls for particular machining procedures. Use carbide tooling with positive rake angles and high pressure coolant delivery.

Use cutting speeds 40-60% lower than those for steel. It is useful to vary the spindle speed during a cut to reduce harmonic vibration which causes chatter and premature tool wear.

The 6mm diameter offers good stiffness in turning operations when properly supported. Use sharp instruments and lighter cuts to reduce work hardening of the surface layer.

    Quality Assurance and Material Traceability

Every batch undergoes comprehensive testing before shipment. Your order includes EN 10204 3.1 Mill Test Certificates providing complete traceability to the original ingot.

We conduct tensile testing per ASTM E8 and bend testing per ASTM E290 to verify mechanical properties. Surface inspection ensures freedom from scratches, seams, or oxide scale that could affect your final product quality.

Ultrasonic examination detects internal discontinuities larger than 1.5mm equivalent flat-bottom hole size. This rigorous inspection protocol guarantees material integrity throughout the bar's cross-section.

FAQ

Q: What distinguishes Grade 4 from Grade 2 titanium bars?

A: Grade 4 offers significantly higher strength with yield strength around 480 MPa compared to Grade 2's 275 MPa. The increased oxygen content in Grade 4 enhances strength while maintaining good ductility and excellent corrosion resistance.

Q: Can you supply material certificates for aerospace applications?

A: Yes, we provide complete material traceability documentation including chemical composition analysis, mechanical test results, and heat treatment records. Certification to AMS specifications available upon request.

Q: How does the 6mm diameter affect machinability?

A: The 6mm size provides excellent stability during machining with minimal deflection. It fits standard collet sizes and bar feeders used in Swiss-type CNC machines, allowing for efficient high-volume production.

Q: Is this material suitable for seawater exposure?

A: Absolutely. Titanium Grade 4 demonstrates exceptional resistance to seawater corrosion, chloride attack, and marine biofouling. It outperforms stainless steel and nickel alloys in saltwater environments.

Q: What surface finishes are available?

A: We offer peeled finish (h9-h11 tolerance) for general applications and centerless ground finish (h6-h7 tolerance) for precision machining. Polished and descaled surfaces come standard to prevent contamination.

Q: Can bars be cut to custom lengths?

A: Yes, we accommodate custom length requirements with precision saw cutting. Lengths from 500mm to 6000mm can be supplied with deburred and chamfered ends ready for your production line.
